A CD player simply fires a laser beam onto the optical disk surface and looks for a
reflection. A lack of a reflection means a ‘hole’ has been burnt into the reflective layer and represents one binary state, whereas a reflection means no ‘hole’ has been burnt
and this represents the other binary state. So by a series of ‘holes’ a digital stream of binary digits can be extracted. The anti-shock system is really just a solid state buffer
that is filled up when the player is started and is used when the binary stream from the CD is interrupted due to mechanical shock. Once the CD stream has been recovered,
the buffer can be filled up again. Hopefully, there will be no interruption to the output from the buffer.
